Why is it not recommended to use metal pallets in cold storage?

In modern cold chain logistics, pallets play a vital role as the basic unit for cargo transportation and storage. They not only improve logistics efficiency, but also promote standardized management of cargo. However, in certain environments such as cold storage, the use of metal pallets is not the best choice. We will explore from multiple perspectives why metal pallets are not recommended for cold storage and introduce some more suitable alternatives.

Disadvantages of metal pallets in cold storage

  • Condensation problem

The temperature in the cold storage is low and the relative humidity is high. Due to its good thermal conductivity, metal pallets are prone to surface condensation. Condensed water will not only increase the humidity of the goods, but may also cause packaging damage, blurred labels and other problems, affecting the quality and storage life of the goods. For some humidity-sensitive goods, such as electronic products and medicines, the use of metal pallets is even more taboo.

  • Corrosion problem

If the condensed water in the cold storage environment contains corrosive substances (such as salt, acidic gas, etc.), it will accelerate the corrosion of metal pallets. After long-term use, the pallets will rust and deform, which not only affects the appearance, but also may lead to a decrease in load-bearing capacity and pose a safety hazard. In addition, metal particles produced by corrosion may also contaminate goods and pose a threat to food safety.

  • Temperature fluctuations

The high thermal conductivity of metal means that while it absorbs and releases heat quickly, it also exacerbates the temperature fluctuations inside the cold storage. When the pallet is taken out of the cold storage and placed in a room temperature environment, or vice versa, the metal pallet will quickly absorb or release heat, affecting the temperature stability of the surrounding environment and is not conducive to maintaining a constant low temperature in the cold storage.

  • Noise problem

Metal pallets are prone to generate loud noise during transportation, especially in automated warehouses. The collision sound of metal pallets with shelves and conveyor lines will affect the working environment and may even cause damage to employees' hearing. This is particularly prominent in a cold storage environment that needs to be kept quiet.

  • Cost and maintenance

Although the initial investment of metal pallets is relatively low, considering their rapid loss in cold storage environments, the maintenance cost and replacement frequency are high in the long run. In contrast, some low-temperature and corrosion-resistant materials have a larger initial investment, but have a longer service life and lower overall cost.

Ideal choice for cold storage pallets

  • Plastic pallets

Plastic pallets, especially those made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP), are very suitable for cold storage environments due to their good low-temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, and light weight and high strength. They will not condense due to temperature changes, will not corrode, and are easy to clean and disinfect, meeting food safety standards. In addition, plastic pallets are quiet during handling, which helps maintain a good working environment.

  • Wooden pallets

Although wooden pallets are not as moisture-resistant as plastic pallets, they can also adapt to cold storage environments to a certain extent under dry treatment conditions. Wooden pallets are naturally environmentally friendly, relatively cheap, and have good load-bearing capacity. However, wooden pallets need to be inspected and replaced regularly to prevent mildew and insect infestation.

Precautions for selecting and using cold storage pallets

  • Load-bearing capacity and size

Choose the appropriate pallet load-bearing capacity and specifications according to the weight and size of the goods stored in the cold storage. Ensure that the pallet can meet the needs of safe stacking of goods without wasting storage space due to excessive size.

  • Low temperature resistance

Prioritize the low temperature resistance of the material to ensure that the pallet does not deform or crack in a low temperature environment and maintains good physical properties.

  • Anti-slip design

Prioritize the low temperature resistance of the material to ensure that the pallet does not deform or crack in a low temperature environment and maintains good physical properties.

  • Anti-slip design

The floor of cold storage is often slippery. Choosing a pallet with an anti-slip design can increase stability and reduce safety hazards during transportation.

  • Easy to clean and disinfect

Considering food safety and hygiene requirements, the pallet should be easy to clean and disinfect to avoid bacterial growth.

  • Sustainability and environmental protection

While meeting functional requirements, consider the sustainability and environmental protection of the pallet, give priority to recyclable and degradable materials, and reduce the impact on the environment.
