In the chemical industry, warehouse safety has always been a top priority. An inconspicuous pallet, if not properly selected, can cause the goods to tilt and collapse, and in severe cases, lead to chemical leaks, environmental pollution, and even safety accidents. So, what kind of plastic pallet should be chosen for chemical bucket storage?
The answer is: high-density polyethylene (HDPE) leak tray. Below, we will provide a comprehensive analysis of materials, load-bearing capacity, leak prevention design, specification selection, usage methods, and applicable scenarios for you.
The requirements for tray materials in chemical bucket storage are very clear - they must be corrosion-resistant. Common acidic and alkaline substances such as hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide in chemical materials can cause corrosion and deformation of wooden pallets; Ordinary PP pallets have weak corrosion resistance and are prone to damage and leakage.
High density polyethylene (HDPE) has been proven to be the best choice. HDPE has a stable molecular structure, excellent acid and alkali resistance, and resistance to organic solvents, which can resist the corrosion of the vast majority of chemicals. Meanwhile, HDPE has better impact resistance and low temperature resistance than PP material, and will not become brittle or crack even in cold environments.

When making a purchase, please make sure to confirm whether the tray is made of 100% new HDPE material and whether it has undergone third-party chemical corrosion resistance testing such as SGS or TUV (such as soaking in 5% sulfuric acid and 10% sodium hydroxide for 72 hours without deformation). Trays made from recycled materials are prone to impurities and cracking after corrosion, posing a great safety hazard.
In addition, for scenarios where flammable solvents such as alcohol and toluene are stored, it is recommended to use anti-static trays with surface resistance values controlled between 10 ⁶ -10 ¹¹ Ω, which can effectively prevent static electricity accumulation from causing combustion and explosion.
2, Load bearing capacity - select three key indicators correctly
The weight of a single chemical drum is usually around 200kg, and multiple layers of stacking are often required for storage. When selecting a pallet, it is important to pay attention to three load-bearing indicators:
Static load: The maximum weight that a pallet can withstand when it is stationary on the ground and fully in contact with the support surface at the bottom. For chemical scenarios, it is recommended to have a static load of ≥ 4 tons.
Dynamic load: The maximum weight that a pallet can withstand during forklift handling. Suggest dynamic load ≥ 1.5 tons.
Shelf load: The load-bearing capacity of a pallet when placed on a shelf crossbeam (suspended). To be put on the shelf, pallets usually need to be reinforced with built-in steel pipes.
Special note: Do not use static load indicators to measure shelf usage - a pallet that can hold 4 tons on the ground may bend when placed on the shelf. Please confirm your storage method before purchasing.

3, Leak proof design - the 'standard' for chemical storage
The biggest risk of storing chemical drums is leakage. Once the barrel ruptures or tilts, chemicals can flow to the ground, not only polluting the environment but also potentially facing environmental penalties.
The leakage tray is a specialized product designed to solve this problem. It comes with a leakage tank (collection tank), and all leaks will flow into the tank without reaching the ground. The high-quality leak tray adopts an integrated molding process, with no gaps or welding points, completely eliminating the risk of leakage.
The leakage tray is usually equipped with a detachable anti slip grille for easy cleaning and replacement; At the same time, there are drainage holes (drain plugs) that can easily drain the collected liquid in the tank, and most of the leaked liquid can also be recycled. In terms of leakage capacity, the single barrel type generally has a capacity of over 40 liters, the double barrel type can reach 120-250 liters, and the four barrel type can reach 260-488 liters.
4, Specification selection - single barrel, double barrel, or four barrel?
Select the appropriate specifications based on the number of chemical drums stored:
Single barrel tray (approximately 670 × 670mm): suitable for storing a single 200L chemical drum, lightweight and flexible, suitable for laboratory, small batch storage or sample storage.
Double bucket tray (approximately 1300 × 660-690mm): can hold two 200L buckets at the same time, suitable for small and medium-sized warehouses and frequent handling scenarios.
Four barrel tray (approximately 1300 × 1300mm): suitable for large-scale storage, high space utilization, and suitable for large chemical warehouses.
When making a purchase, it is also necessary to confirm whether the tray size can accommodate your bucket body, and the edge of the bucket must not exceed the edge of the tray. If forklift operation is required, confirm whether the pallet is suitable for your forklift type (manual hydraulic truck, electric forklift, etc.).
Placement requirement: The tray must be placed on a flat and hard surface to prevent tilting. When the tray carrying heavy objects lands, it should be handled gently to avoid damage caused by uneven force.
Stacking standard: When stacking chemical drums on each pallet, the drum body should be symmetrically placed so that the center of gravity is located at the center of the pallet. The edge of the barrel shall not exceed the edge of the pallet. It is recommended to stack 1-2 layers and overloading is strictly prohibited.
Forklift operation: When operating a forklift, pay attention to the operating procedures to avoid hitting the edge of the pallet and causing damage.
Storage environment: Avoid direct sunlight to prevent plastic aging. The recommended storage temperature is between -18 ℃ and 40 ℃.

HDPE leak trays are widely applicable in various scenarios:
Chemical raw material warehouse - long-term storage of chemicals such as acids, bases, solvents, etc
Temporary chemical warehouse - short-term transit storage
Production workshop - storage of bulk raw materials next to the production line
Outdoor storage area - HDPE material is UV resistant, rust proof, and corrosion-resistant, suitable for outdoor use
Hazardous waste temporary storage warehouse - storing containers of waste chemicals
Laboratory - Safe storage of small amounts of chemical reagents
Compared to wooden pallets, plastic pallets will not get damp, moldy, insect infested, or crack in humid environments, nor will they produce damaged debris mixed with chemical raw materials. HDPE pallets can have a service life of 5-10 years in general environments.
7, Summary
The best choice for storing chemical drums is HDPE material+leak proof design+sufficient load-bearing capacity.
Please remember four key points when purchasing:
- Material: Confirmed to be 100% new HDPE material with third-party corrosion resistance test report
- Load bearing: Select the corresponding static load, dynamic load, and shelf load parameters according to the usage mode (flat stacking/forklift handling/shelf storage)
- Leak prevention: Priority should be given to selecting integrated leak trays with drainage holes and anti slip grilles
Choose single barrel, double barrel, or four barrel models based on the number of barrels and warehouse space
